Vintage year for boys' hockey XI
This has been an unforgettable year for the boys’ hockey XI and it was very appropriate that they performed so impressively, justifying the huge investment made in a newly laid astroturf.
The team have played nine matches, winning seven and drawing two. In those, they scored 29 goals and conceded only 11.
Our best hockey of the season was produced versus St Albans and The Leys. Both were high-class games where our superior class in midfield finally won through on each occasion. We seemed to find life a little tougher to break down less gifted teams who piled 10 men behind the ball. Patience, composure and astute lead-running was needed and these will be valuable lessons for next year when nine of the side return.
We had the potential to score from every position, and so it proved with 29 goals in nine games (eight different players getting their name on the score sheet). We were fortunate to remain more or less injury free and this maintained the consistency of selection that enabled the side to blend itself into the unforgettable vintage of 2007.
