Haileybury’s Greenpower Project: Driving Innovation in STEM Education
Haileybury is proud to participate in the Greenpower project, an exciting initiative that ignites passion for science and engineering among young people through the challenge of designing, building, and racing electric cars.
About Greenpower
The Greenpower Education Trust is a UK-based charity that aims to inspire students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through the thrill of motorsport. Key facts about Greenpower include:
- Over 700 teams participate throughout the UK
- 30+ regional events and an annual International Final
- More than 10,000 students engage each year, from primary school to university level
- Growing international participation, with programs in the USA, Iberia, and Benelux
The Haileybury Greenpower Team
Our dedicated team of pupils is actively preparing for their first race in the upcoming term. Their current focus areas include:
- Regulations Compliance: Ensuring the Haileybury car meets all Greenpower guidelines
- Vehicle Enhancements:
- Adjusting carbon fibre thickness
- Designing a safety guard for the chain and driving gear
- Securing bodywork to the chassis
- Developing nose cone attachment and graphic designs
- Creating safety markings
- Completing motor cooling air duct
- Race Day Preparations: Welding a trolley for safe battery transportation
Benefits of Participation
The Greenpower project offers numerous advantages to our pupils:
- Hands-on experience in engineering and technology
- Development of teamwork and project management skills
- Application of classroom knowledge to real-world challenges
- Exposure to sustainable technologies and environmental awareness
Addressing the STEM Skills Gap
Participation in Greenpower aligns with broader efforts to address the STEM skills shortage. According to a June 2021 report from The Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET)1, there’s an estimated shortfall of over 173,000 workers in the STEM sector in the UK, averaging 10 unfilled roles per business.
Looking Ahead
As our team progresses through their Gantt chart of tasks, excitement is building for their debut in the F24+ race.
We invite the Haileybury community to support our Greenpower team as they embark on this innovative journey, combining education, engineering, and environmental consciousness.
Stay tuned for updates on our team’s progress and upcoming race events!
