The EcoMap Project: Mapping Haileybury’s Biodiversity
Haileybury is proud to introduce the innovative EcoMap project, a groundbreaking initiative that combines hands-on ecological research with cutting-edge technology to create a comprehensive, interactive map of our local biodiversity.
Project Overview
The EcoMap project aims to:
- Chart diverse habitats and species across Haileybury’s grounds and surrounding areas
- Engage pupils in real-world ecological research
- Create a dynamic, interactive map that updates in real-time
- Track seasonal changes and long-term trends in local biodiversity
Ecological Survey Techniques
Our pupils are learning and applying standardised ecological survey methods to collect data on:
- Birds
- Mammals
- Invertebrates
- Reptiles
- Amphibians
This data is then integrated into the EcoMap, providing a continuously updated picture of our local ecosystem.
Current Focus: Bird Surveys
In the Autumn term, our pupils have concentrated on developing bird survey techniques in preparation for the wintering bird surveys. These surveys will provide valuable data on:
- Winter migrant species
- Population changes
- Habitat preferences
We anticipate that these surveys will contribute significantly to our understanding of Haileybury’s ecological landscape, with a particular emphasis on identifying and monitoring endangered species.

- Implementing ‘No Mow May’ in several grass areas
