Speech Day
Beautiful sunshine greeted parents, pupils, friends and staff for Speech day on Saturday 1st June. The Guest of Honour this year was Vice-Admiral Michael Gretton, C.B., the Director of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, and the visiting preacher at The Commemoration Service in Chapel was The Very Revd John Irvine, Dean of Coventy. Vice-Admiral Michael Gretton spoke the value of an all-round education with opportunity for all young people to achieve at their own level. He spoke to Haileybury DoE students in the audience who described the activities in which they had been recently involved.
The day continued with House parties and picnics in the sunshine, the MCC v Haileybury cricket match on Pavilion and Jazz performances in the Quad. Parents and friends were able to appreciated displays of work in various departments throughout the school including the A2 Level Art Exhibition, Design Technology displays and a Rackets demonstration. The cricket brought the day to a close with a drawn score and the presentation of a cheque for £1000 to Mark Williams, Chief Executive of The Lord’s Taverners. This was the result of monies raised as part of general fundraising activities surrounding the Haileybury cricket tour to South Africa in December last year. £1000 has already been sent to The Western Province Cricket Association in Cape Town to support development projects there.
