Oxford choral scholarship for Johanna
Congratulations to Upper Sixth pupil Johanna Hockmann (Alb), who has been offered a choral scholarship to Oxford. She has been offered a place to read Music at Pembroke College, subject to IB results and interviews.
Johanna gained a Music Scholarship to Haileybury last year, fulfilling her potential by taking Grade 8 flute and passing with Distinction (attaining an impressive 142 marks). This was the first time she had taken an Associated Board exam.
Director of Music at Haileybury, Quentin Thomas, says this is an extraordinary achievement and a story of ambition being fulfilled.
"Sheer determination, talent, aspiration and dedication mark Johanna out as one of the brightest musical stars Haileybury has seen in some time and I salute her outstanding work and contributions to date.
"She participates in everything possible – Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Band, Flute Ensembles, Madrigals, concerts galore … yet still finds time to prepare for Oxbridge, a diploma on the Flute, and to submit terrific pieces of academic work."
Johanna entertained pupils and staff yesterday at the first of the "My Concert" series of recitals. She performed works by Bach and Mozart, showing us all why she is so deserved of her scholarship.
Well done, Johanna!
