Lord Douglas Hurd
Lord Hurd, former Conservative Foreign Secretary in John Major’s Government, spoke to Haileybury’s International Society on Tuesday 23rd April, delivering the fifth annual East India Lecture to scholars of the school, staff, parents and friends. Lord Hurd began by speaking about the political situation in France as well as other current issues such as those surrounding Saddam Hussein in Iraq. His main topic however was the problems in the Middle East, highlighting the complexity of the issues at stake and Britain’s moral and historical reasons for being involved. He finished by taking lively and thought-provoking questions from the floor including one on his alleged role in the Kosovo crisis.
