Lacrosse wins against Norwich HS and Oakham
The lacrosse teams had a very good showing last weekend, with a double-header against Norwich High School and Oakham.
Despite the injured or sick list growing, the 1st XII maintained their standard of play beautifully. Emily Bowden-Eyre, the 2nd XII captain, filled at 3rd man and kept our zone defence virtually impenetrable. The first half showed our midfield to be decidedly scrappy at times, but the squad soon got its rhythm set. The team’s fitness allowed them to more than make up for the lost minutes and the final score showed a 11-1 home victory.
Due to a late Oakham arrival, the 2nd XII played the very same team the 1st XII did. Led by Lucy Joseph, the 2nd XII managed to hold Norwich off in the first half with a score of 2-2, but unfortunately they got the better of the defence in the second half and beat us 6-3.
Afterwards, the team definitely rallied against Oakham thanks to a few new rising stars. Lucy Portsmouth drilled 2 goals, Kara Stone hammered in 4, Sissy Reuter snuck in 1, and Kasita Rochanakorn scored 1 as well. With these offensive efforts, coupled with the defensive pressure applied by the entire team, Oakham was beaten 8-5.
The 1st XII also quickly dispatched the Oakham side by settling into a 7-0 lead at the half. Our opponents did rally for 2 goals but the team scented a win and would not be denied. The final score was a gratifying 15-2 for our athletes. On a final note, Lauren Smith scored a quadruple hat trick in this single afternoon.
It is safe to say that the spectators and parents who braved the misty afternoon went away cheerfully convinced that Haileybury Lacrosse is thriving.
