Haileybury Youth Trust among world's leading green innovators
This week Scandinavian think tank Sustainia released a study on 100 leading sustainability innovations deployed on global markets and Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT) has been selected for its state-of-the-art innovation.
HYT's Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block (ISSB) provides a sustainable and appropriate solution to Africa’s needs for a viable, environmentally-friendly construction technology. The compressed soil block, mixed with a little cement and cured rather than fired, is a low cost, low-carbon alternative to the traditional and environmentally damaging fired brick for many developing countries.
HYT Director and Haileybury English teacher Russell Matcham: "We are encouraged this simple construction technology is transforming Ugandan communities, meeting basic humanitarian needs sustainably. HYT’s appropriate technology can improve lives across Africa, at no environmental cost."
The ISSB system has been deployed in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to date.
More than 900 technologies and projects on nearly all continents have been researched and the published Sustainia100 study presents 100 trailblazing innovations across ten industries.
“The selected Sustainia100 solutions are an inspiration to companies, cities and consumers worldwide. Sustainable innovation is truly transforming markets and industries – things are happening at an incredible pace.” says Laura Storm, Director of Sustainia.
