Cricket Tour
Haileybury was one of five British teams invited to take part in the inaugural International Schools Cricket Festival at Diocesan College in Cape Town in December. For a fortnight 14 Haileybury cricketers exchanged the bleak mid-winter for the sunny climes and warm hospitality of Cape Town in mid-summer. Furthermore they acquitted themselves very respectably against predicably competitive local opposition, benefiting from the pre-tour advice of Haileybury’s professional coach Geoff Howarth, the former New Zealand test cricketer. During the 8 days of the Festival 5 matches were played exclusively against South African teams, including a Western Province Development team made up in the main from talented black cricketers from the township clubs.
