Calling all OH sailors
The Arrow Trophy dates back to 1987 when Old Etonians were exhorted to compete against Old Harrovians in what is now an important annual yachting regatta, attracting more than 20 entries.
The Old Haileyburian sailing club has entered a team a number of times over the past six years and even came second in one of the races. We would very much like to enter a team (or two!) into this year’s event, which takes place in Portsmouth from Saturday, 8 October to Sunday, 9 October.
The Organiser, Josh Lawson (Hailey 2000), says there is space for between eight and 12 crew on one boat but if there is sufficient interest, the club could put out more than one boat. "Obviously we would like to compete, but even if you’re an amateur sailor or would like to do it for fun, you are welcome to join us. The Master, Joe Davies, may even join us this year," he says.
Josh has to enter his team by 19 August so if you are interested, please contact him as soon as possible – his contact details are at the bottom of this article.
The racing costs are a maximum of £210 per person for Boat Hire and Formal Dinner at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club plus £200 deposit per person. There will be an additional £50 accommodation costs if necessary. The boats, rented from Sunsail Boats (brand new racing yachts), are picked up from Portsmouth early on Saturday and will be returned around 6pm on Sunday.
The format is fleet racing on the Saturday, with the top four teams match racing on the Sunday and the remainder sailing two more fleet races. In addition to the principal trophy the following have been added:
The Sherborne Salver (for the runner-up)
The Winchester Target (3rd)
The Radley Shaker (4th)
The Charterhouse Bowl (winner of the fleet racing).
The following schools have taken part over the years, many of them every year: Harrow, Eton, Marlborough, Sherborne, Gordonstoun, Uppingham, Charterhouse, Downside, Wellington, Rugby, Winchester, Canford, Radley, Stowe, Malvern, Dulwich, Bradfield, Haileybury, Bryanston, Worth Abbey, Oundle and Cheltenham Ladies College.
