Bartle Frere, Colvin win house athletics
Last Thursday’s house athletics afternoon had many highlights despite the appalling conditions.
Joseph Jawad, Hugo Henderson and David Hickson showed real quality over the hurdles. Some fantastic 800m races took place with great individual battles; the best of these for the boys were between Oli Sexton and Xavier Bardy, and for the girls between Lauren Smith and Sophie Redburn.
The sprint races saw fine performances from Ben Nichols and Joseph Jawad who both ran national schools entry standard times. Ben missed the school record by 0.08 seconds. Louis Steven put in excellent times in both the 100m and 200m. The 1500m races saw fine solo runs from Sophie Auster and James Monk but the best battle of the day was between Oli Lepage-Dean and Chris Mackenzie-Grey – with Chris winning on the final lap.
The field events saw great performance from the girls, with Ashling Coyle breaking two school records. Pat Thorp, Will Englander and Oli Bartholomew threw well despite the wind and rain. Joseph Jawad and Ed Jacobs jumped exceedingly well. In all, 10 school records were broken, by Ashling Coyle with 2, Kathryn Hall, Izzy Baugh, Lucy Phillips, Sophie Auster, Sephie Bridgman-Baker, Astrix Ferris, Amber Banbury and Lauren King.
As always, the relays were fought with a real competitive spirit and were where the overall competitions were won and lost.
Individual awards were awarded for the first time this year – these went to the individual who did the best in any event according to the national standards. The following will receive medals:
