Spanish
Learning Spanish gives transferable skills highly sought-after in the workplace; written communication skills, interpersonal skills, presentation skills.
Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world with more than 500 million speakers as a native language, making it a valuable asset for communication in an increasingly interconnected global society. Spanish is the official language in 21 countries. It is also the second most studied language.
Proficiency in Spanish not only facilitates travel and cultural exchange but also opens doors to diverse career opportunities in fields such as international business, diplomacy, and tourism.
At Haileybury, the emphasis on a holistic education means that learning Spanish is not just about language acquisition; it also involves engaging with the rich cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. This cultural immersion can be further enriched through various extracurricular activities and trips, allowing pupils to practice their language skills in real-world contexts.
Moreover, the supportive learning environment at Haileybury, characterized by small class sizes and dedicated teachers, fosters a personalised approach to language learning. This enables pupils to develop their communication skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, which are essential in today’s job market.
The diverse cultural environment at Haileybury, which hosts pupils from over 40 nationalities, enhances this learning experience.
Academic pathways
The Spanish Department offers public examination courses at GCSE, A level and International Baccalaureate (IB).
Beyond the curriculum
The Haileybury Spanish Society offers many social activities such as themed cultural events, film evenings, and cooking masterclasses.
Spanish Sixth Form pupils participate in debating competitions. This year, one of our Lower Sixth pairs won the East Regional Debating Competition.
There is also a theatre trip organised to watch La casa de Bernarda Alba at the Cervantes Theatre in London so that pupils can enhance their knowledge of the play, which they study as part of their syllabus.
Pupils also attend a study day of Pan’s Labyrinth, which they study as part of their syllabus, at the British Film Institute in London.
Haileybury Spanish pupils are encouraged to participate in the Bulletin for Advance Spanish and the ISMLA (Independent School Modern Language Association) essay competitions.
Haileybury Sixth Form Spanish pupils can also take part in the annual immersive trip to Spain.
