Hockey
Hockey at Haileybury is one of the School’s greatest sports, with a long-established history and an excellent reputation.
Haileybury hockey continues to grow and achieve more each year. Hockey is now an all year round sport, with the girls 1st XI playing straight through the first two terms and even in the summer up to five sessions a week on offer.
Season and Pre-season
The main girls’ hockey takes place in the Autumn term with an extensive pre-season in the summer term and a tour over the summer, as well as hosting a pre-season tournament just before term starts.
Boys compete in the Spring term, with pre-season throughout the autumn term.
Indoor hockey for both girl and boys is played throughout the year, with the peak of the season at the end of the Autumn term.
Superb facilities
Haileybury boasts two all-weather Astroturf pitches, situated next to the Sports Complex. Thanks to these wonderful pitches, we are able to host all Hertfordshire County tournaments, as well as county and east training camps, and the Independent Association of Prep School (IAPS) qualifiers and finals.
The School’s sports hall also offers two indoor hockey pitches with boards and goals. The School hosts the indoor training for both Hertford HC juniors and Southgate HC senior and junior teams.
Top-level training
We field 20 girls’ teams and 10 boys’ teams across the age groups.
An experienced coaching staff ensures that top-level training is provided, and fixtures are played every weekend in the Autumn and Easter term.
Tournaments
As well as entering all the local county competitions which continue to East and then nationals, the girls 15s and 14s combine to play in the Independent School Hockey Cup (ISHC). The 1st XI girls play in England Hockey’s Tier 1 League and the U19 ISHC cup, both stretching across the Autumn and Spring terms.
Their regular opponents include schools such as Bradfield, Felsted, Sevenoaks, Oakham, Oundle, The Perse, Bancrofts, Sutton Valence and Ipswich.
Expert coaching
Rob Schilling, Director of Hockey at Haileybury is a former American international. Rob is an inspirational coach who has played at the highest club and international level for many years, with over 100 caps for America and captaining the indoor team. He has won league titles with Birmingham University, Southgate, Sevenoaks and East Grinstead. Most recently he gained two indoor promotions into division 1 and promotion from division 1 to premier league, outdoor with Southgate 22/23. He also holds a Pan American outdoor silver, gold and silver indoor and has played in the Indoor World Cup. He was also selected to play in the recent Indoor World Cup in 2022, however sadly this was cancelled due to COVID.
Rob has coached Southgate and Surbiton Men to promotion into the English Indoor Premier League as well as WPCC Ladies, in Cape Town, to top division victory and is now leading the Haileybury High Performance Programme. He is currently also playing for Southgate Men’s 1st XI.
We are fortunate that the coaching and teaching staff at Haileybury also includes six national league level players.
