Richard III follows the ruthless rise to power of Richard, Duke of Gloucester. The play explores themes of power, betrayal, and the bloody consequences of unchecked ambition.
Shakespeare took some dramatic license with his take on this historic episode, but in doing so highlights the role of propaganda in shaping historical narratives. Indeed, the vilification of Richard by Tudor historians has been questioned by modern scholars, reminding us to be critical of biased accounts that serve political agendas.
In a year of elections and an era of fake news, Richard’s ruthless desire to rule at all costs draws strong political parallels.
The play will be performed on three sides, with a traditional approach to staging and costume.
Seating is unreserved. All are welcome.
