Haileybury welcomes Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff
On Tuesday, Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff delivered an exceptional Haileybury Lecture to Haileybury College.
As a Fellow of the Royal Society and recipient of the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize, Professor Poliakoff is a world leader in Green Chemistry and Science Communication. The Professor is well known by the pupils for his appearances on the renowned YouTube channel Periodic Videos.
Professor Poliakoff shared in his lecture the importance of considering sustainable principles associated with chemical processes in manufacturing, showed how his research into superfluids can contribute to alternative processes and shone a light on how Chemistry will play an important role in our pursuit of a more sustainable future for our planet. Pupils remarked on how accessible Professor Poliakoff’s lecture was, despite its presentation of advanced Chemistry concepts.
Professor Poliakoff also enjoyed a tour of Haileybury’s new SciTech facilities. Pupils involved in the Stan-X and CubeSat Programmes presented their work to the Professor to demonstrate the current research being undertaken by the pupils as part of the SciTech Research programme.
The professor also enjoyed time with Sixth Form Chemistry pupils who discussed their A-level and IB work as well as their aspirations for university.
