Sports Science
Studying sports science at Haileybury offers an exciting and challenging learning environment, where pupils are encouraged to link key sporting ideas with practical performance.
Why study sports science at Haileybury?
Throughout the Haileybury sports science programme, pupils gain insight into the physiological, psychological, and social-cultural aspects of physical activity and sport. This not only broadens their understanding of sports but also fosters the development of transferable skills such as decision-making, psychological understanding, independent thinking, and problem-solving.
Engaging in sports science opens pupils’ eyes to the fascinating world of sports performance. They will have the chance to participate practically, while also delving into the theoretical concepts that underpin physical activity and sport.
This combination of physical performance and academic challenge provides pupils with the opportunity to directly apply the theoretical knowledge gained from academic study to improve their performance, creating a holistic learning experience that prepares them for both further academic pursuits and real-world applications in sports and beyond.
Academic pathways
Sports science is offered as a Removes Pathway and as GCSE, A level and International Baccalaureate (IB) public examination courses.
Beyond the curriculum
Haileybury offers an academic enrichment programme in contemporary issues in sports, as well as a Sports Leadership programme – level 3 qualification.
Lower Sixth pupils can also take part in a sports science trip to Hertfordshire University and a Sports science research project.
From a co-curricular perspective, sport plays a pivotal role in Haileybury life. Our ‘sport for all’ ethos means that we want all our pupils to enjoy sport regardless of experience or ability. We regularly have 20 teams for each of our core sports, hockey, rugby, netball and cricket with well over 1,000 fixtures a year across more than 25 different sports in total.
Studying at Haileybury comes with an impressive sporting infrastructure. Our facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, all-weather pitches, fitness suites and indoor courts. Outside, among 500 acres of woodland, we have more than 20 pitches for rugby, cricket, lacrosse, hockey and football. The Sports Hall is home to regular netball, badminton, table tennis and trampolining sessions while our indoor cricket nets and bowling machines allow cricketers to train all year round.
