Why study physics at Haileybury?

Physics is an essential subject for many science, engineering and related subjects.  Physics provides a range of useful skills, including mathematical, practical, analytical and problem-solving skills and is very useful for a wide range of degree subjects. These skills are transferable to a large number of different professions.

The physics program is designed to engage pupils through a combination of observations, measurements, experiments, and mathematical analysis, aiming to provide quantitative explanations for various phenomena. This approach not only enhances pupils’ understanding of the physical world but also develops their problem-solving skills and analytical abilities.

The language of physics is mathematics, thus mathematical and problem-solving skills are developed extensively here and applied to both familiar and unfamiliar situations. The role of physics is also emphasised in terms of its social, economic and environmental importance.

Academic pathways

Physics is offered as GCSE, A level and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses.

Beyond the curriculum

The Physics Department invites speakers to Haileybury and takes pupils to local lectures and events.  Pupils are encouraged to enter a range of Physics Olympiad competitions.  The Physics Society is run by pupils and meets weekly.
