A week in the life of the English Department

The first week after Easter promises to be a hectic one for the English Department. On 24 April, the Literary Society welcomes world-renowned poet, Les Murray, who is touring the country to promote his New Selected Poems. This is a rare chance to listen to a poet who Blake Morrison claimed is "one of the superleague which includes Seamus Heaney, Derek Walcott and Joseph Brodsky". The next day, 25 April, sees a return visit of David Davies, respected Chief Examiner for English Literature at Edexcel: he will be talking to our Sixth Form students about exam technique.

That same evening Dr James and Mr Kazi will take a class of IB students to see the ENO’s exciting operatic adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale: it promises to be a shocking but memorable event and will enrich their understanding of this prophetic novel. And, finally, on 27 April, Ian Brinton, editor of Use of English and a highly respected teacher and academic (as well as an old friend of Haileybury), will spend the morning talking to our A2 English Literature students about approaching the unseen texts in their final examinations.
