Recognition for MUN delegates
Two Haileybury students, Alex Becker and Dan Kimpton, received Highly Commended awards at the recent St. Andrews International Model United Nations (SAIMUN) held in Dublin.
The awards are the second highest personal awards at the conference. Held in the world-renowned Jury’s Ballsbridge Hotel in Dublin, this MUN gathering is second only to The Hague MUN in importance, and is unmatched in terms of the standard of debate and the atmosphere at the conference.
In previous years, Haileybury has dispatched several delegations to this prestigious event, but this year only one (representing Singapore) was sent, albeit a larger delegation than usual.
The standard of debate at SAIMUN is always very high, with many international schools joining the English and Irish schools to debate topics ranging from genetically modified food, through the question of Chechnya, to the setting of a UN Peacekeeping force.
Our delegates excelled themselves in debate and were congratulated by more than one chairperson on our performances.
Special thanks should go to Alex Becker for keeping Haileybury’s special relationship with St. Andrews school intact, and to Mr Evans, for providing a bit of sanity in an otherwise unhinged trip.
