Legacy Information
Including Haileybury in your will is one of the most impactful ways you can support the School. For Haileybury, legacy gifts go a long way in helping to secure our financial future, ensuring we can continue to inspire and motivate our pupils for generations to come.
Haileybury Sixth Form Pupil
“I’m excited to think that I could still continue to shape my legacy even after I have left. That’s the great thing about Haileybury – you are always connected”
Tax Efficient Giving
Pledging a legacy to Haileybury is an easy, tax efficient way to play an important role in Haileybury’s current and future success.
Haileybury is a registered charity (Charity number: 310013) and is therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. This means that the School pays no tax on gifts of money or property made in your lifetime or after your death. A legacy to Haileybury may also reduce tax payable on your estate.
Charities Aid Foundation
If you are a UK donor with a Charities Aid Foundation account, you may also choose to nominate Haileybury as a beneficiary through the CAF Expression of Wishes Form.
Types of Legacy
There are a number of different types of legacy you may wish to consider. The main types are described below along with suggested wording that can be adapted by your solicitor.
Residuary Legacy
This is a gift of the remainder (or proportion of the remainder) of your estate, after all payments, taxes and other bequests have been made. This option allows you to take care of friends and family first and still make a meaningful donation. We suggest the following wording:
“I give ___% / all [please specify] of the residue of my estate to the Trustees of Haileybury and Imperial Service College, (Registered Charity Number 310013) of Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG13 7NU, to hold on trust for its general charitable purposes.”
Pecuniary Legacy
This is a fixed sum of money decided by you. We suggest the following wording:
“I give the sum of ___ to the Trustees of Haileybury and Imperial Service College, (Registered Charity Number 310013) of Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG13 7NU, to hold on trust for its general charitable purposes.”
Specific Legacy
You can also bequeath specific personal possessions such as property or shares. We suggest the following wording:
“I give ___________ [detailed description of specific item] to the Trustees of Haileybury and Imperial Service College, (Registered Charity Number 310013) of Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG13 7NU, to hold on trust for its general charitable purposes.”
Reversionary Legacy
This enables you to pass your estate (or asset) to an initial beneficiary to have the benefit and enjoyment during their lifetime. After that time, the estate (or asset) can be passed to the School absolutely.
Wording for reversionary bequests to support the School will need to be discussed with your solicitor.
When making or updating your will we strongly recommend that you consult a solicitor to ensure it is legally valid and accurately reflects your intentions.
