New hockey team sees two county players
Haileybury is building a new team this year after the departure of 10 of last year’s team to gap years and university. The season has, however, already got off to a good start with the news that Sarah Monk and Vicky Hewett have both been selected to represent Hertfordshire at under 17 level.
In the first game of the term, Haileybury lost a tightly contested local derby against Queenswood 1-0. Vicky Hewett, in goal, was outstanding and indeed the whole of the defence played extremely well. The Queenswood team was sharp after a summer tour but the girls are optimistic about turning the tables on them, when we defend the county under 18 title at the county championships on 8 October.
On 17 September, Haileybury convincingly beat King’s Ely 2-1, with goals from Emily James and Natalie MacDonald. Haileybury had all the pressure in the second half and, in the words of Jose Mourinho, the opposition parked a bus in front of their goal as Kings Ely had nine players back in their circle defending for much of the half. Roz Brennan played outstandingly well, pushing up into midfield in the absence of captain, Katie Stacey.
The Saturday before last, the 1st XI played outstandingly well against a very strong Kings Canterbury side and, with 11 minutes to go, the score was 0-0. Unfortunately, the effect of fluey colds caught up with a number of the players in the later stages and Haileybury was unable to cling on for a draw. Magenta McDougall was outstanding in the first half and, again, Vicky Hewett was outstanding in goal.
Well done to the team!
