Schools' hat trick for Antonio
Haileybury’s star athlete, Antonio Infantino, has once again won gold after competing at the UK School Games at Warwick University last weekend.
Antonio was representing the East of England as well as Haileybury at the event.
His most recent success means that he has completed a hat trick of the Schools’ titles – golds in the English Schools, International Schools and UK School Games meetings.
Last weekend, after competing in the 200m heats on Saturday, he went through to the final on the Sunday as the fastest qualifier, with a time of 21.95s. On Saturday afternoon, he ran an anchor leg in the 4 x 100m relay and broke the UK record in a time of 41.76s.
On Sunday morning, he ran the 200m final and won in a new legal personal best of 21.52s – 1/2 a second ahead of his nearest competitor! Although only in the competition’s second year, Antonio set a Championship Record.
Apart from meeting celebrities such as Kelly Holmes, Darren Campbell and Daley Thompson, Antonio was surprised to see the familiar face of Mr David Pyle, previously the Head of Lower School, who happened to be one of the competition officials.
Channel 4 will show highlights of the event on Sunday 16th and 23rd September between 8am and 9am. Antonio was interviewed after his race.
The event, spread over five days in an Olympic-style village, featured over 1,300 competitors and covered eight sports. For more information, see http://www.ukschoolgames.com/story.php?StoryId=621
