Haileybury into semi finals of Boodles Cup
Haileybury’s 1st X1 footballers beat Westminster in the quarter final of the Boodles Cup Competition on Tuesday, reaching the semi final for the first time in the history of the competition.
Haileybury beat Westminster 5-4 on penalties after the match had finished 0-0 after extra-time. It was a hard fought victory in a game of few chances with defences on top.
The Haileybury back four of full backs Eddie Songaila and Charlie Risley, centre-back Harrison Hope and sweeper Sam Anthony, were outstanding. Captain Jonny Depledge led by example in midfield with Abdul Wushishi and never stopped battling and fighting.
Despite going 1-0 down in the penalty shootout, the team showed real character to fight back, with goalkeeper Rhys Carter saving the Westminster 4th and then 6th penalties before stepping up to score the winning penalty himself.
In the semi finals, Haileybury will make the long journey to Millfield in Somerset. Before then, the team go on tour to Barcelona in January.
Congratulations to the team!
