Frank Field MP to address Haileybury pupils

Frank Field MP will be the guest of honour at the 19th Attlee Memorial Lecture, to be held at Haileybury on Thursday, 16 September 2010.

Mr Field has been the Labour MP for Birkenhead since 1979. From 1997 to 1998, he served as the Minister of Welfare Reform before leaving the Government, following differences with the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. He went on to become one of the Labour Government’s most vocal critics from within the party on the backbenches. After Labour’s defeat in the 2010 election, he was given the role of "poverty czar" in the new Coalition Government.

The annual Attlee Memorial Lecture honours Haileybury’s famous alumnus, Clement Attlee, who left Haileybury in 1901 and went on to become Prime Minister from 1945 to 1951.

"The general title of the annual address is ‘Leadership’, in the belief that at least some of Haileybury’s pupils will in time go on to take up positions of leadership and responsibility in the years after they leave school," says Head of the Politics Department, Michael Perrins.

The talk starts at 5.30pm and will be held in Big School at Haileybury.
