A Whole Lot of Dough: Pizza Sales Raise £680 for HYT
A ‘Dough Raising Weekend’ at Dominos Pizza in Hertford raised £680 for the Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT) by donating £1 to HYT for every single pizza sold from the store on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 November. This fantastic sum is the cost of a 20,000 litre rainwater storage tank that can provide clean water to a school.
HYT Co-ordinator at Haileybury, Russell Matcham, is delighted this fund-raising intiative has been so successful. "Many Ugandan schools have no access to water, locally, at all."
"A water tank means children can wash their hands – essential for personal hygiene, in a country where bad water and poor hygiene can be fatal. Water is also available for cooking and washing and there are social and educational benefits too. Children are able to stay in school rather than take time out to walk to a well or borehole. Girls in particular are able to avoid the real possibility of abuse and attack on isolated paths and tracks when fetching water. Water storage is a brilliant and simple way of improving lives in a number of ways.
We can build a water tank in a poor community school and immediately improve health and educational opportunities. And, what’s more, we will be using men from the village itself, whom HYT has trained, to do the work, thus generating further income and employment opportunities."
