Exploring the Socratic method - Bettany Hughes at Haileybury
Bettany Hughes visited Haileybury yesterday evening and delivered a lively, engaging and at times surprising, talk on 'Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life' as part of the College's 150th Anniversary Lecture series.
A large audience of pupils, staff and members of the local community were treated to a whistle-stop tour of Socrates' life and how he came to challenge the traditions of 5th Century BC Athens in encouraging its citizens to ask questions – to live life better.
Ms Hughes enthusiastically answered questions herself at the end of her talk, before signing books and departing in preparation for an early morning's filming the following day.
