Trevelyan

Meet the Housemaster

Hugo Wilson, Housemaster of Trevelyan from September 2024, was previously Haileybury’s Head of Psychology for five years and Head of Year from 2018 to 2022. He is married to Suzie, who teaches Spanish at Haileybury and tutors in the Lower School. They have two young sons, Cillian and Ronan.

As well as teaching Psychology, Hugo coaches rugby, lacrosse, and cross-country. He is a keen Northampton Saints fan and aspiring ultra-runner having caught the bug whilst running from London to Brighton in 2022.

Trevelyan is one of the oldest boarding houses at Haileybury and it is located in the heart of the School. It is a warm, friendly and purposeful ‘home away from home’ for the boys. Sir Alan Ayckbourn, one of our famous past pupils, coined the term ‘Trevelyan-ite’ to describe the members of Trevelyan and still today you will find a strong and proud house spirit, which helps foster a close-knit community and sense of solidarity amongst the pupils. Kindness continues to be the most important value of the House, and put simply you will find ‘Trevelyan-ites’ to be kind, well-rounded and ambitious young people.

House character

The Trevelyan ethos is to be happy yet purposeful, a House where the qualities of honesty, good humour, ambition, and respect for others are much in evidence. High moral standards and good behaviour are expected and part of the culture.

The boys are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves, respect others and become independent and confident – but at the same time be tolerant and sensitive to others. The HM and Tutors work hard to help all the boys achieve their academic best and to get involved in the wider opportunities available at Haileybury. Day-to-day pastoral care is promoted through tutoring and peer support.

Leadership and teamwork are fostered through increasing responsibility. In Trevelyan, boys are encouraged to have a strong sense of personal responsibility, leading to increasing independence in their studies. The House also promotes healthy competition, and there are plenty of opportunities to represent Trevelyan in a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural or co-curricular activities.

House facilities

Trevelyan was fully refurbished in 2018 to make it a welcoming, friendly, comfortable, modern place to live, work and socialise.

The dormitory for the Removes and Middles leads directly onto the HM’s house, whose door is – quite literally – always open, so every pupil has somewhere to turn when they need help or guidance on any subject.

Matron, tutors and HPA representative

Hugo is supported in his work by Jennifer Featherstone, the House matron, who helps with the day-to-day domestic management of the House and is an immediate pastoral point of contact for both boys and parents. The House also has an experienced team of tutors and its own representative from the Haileybury Parents’ Association.

History

Situated in the main quadrangle at the heart of Haileybury, Trevelyan is the oldest of all the Houses.

The House badge is a cross pattée gules (a red cross with “feet”), and its motto “Time Tryeth Troth” (‘Time Tests Patience’). The House colours are red and black.
